design course VI. semester

a beautiful way of failing

The idea behind the collection in the fifth semester's design course is the development of a kind of urban camouflage. So camouflage clothing for the city. This humorous theme resulted in a very free way of working. On the basis of three architectural buildings in Hamburg, clothing was designed in an abstract form, which is supposed to interpret the main features of the building in a more or less obvious form. In addition, different materials were used for each of the three outfits and textiles were designed handcrafted by myself. The coat in the top row of pictures is handprinted with fabric paint. The brick shapes on the two-piece garment in the lower row were also individually embroidered by hand on the dark blue wool.

dystopia - the collection

The subject of the first part of the design course in the fifth semester dealt with utopias and dystopias. The aim was to design a future reality. In the cours of this, a dystopian society was sketched and its clothing visualized in a small collection. The handcrafted earrings in the top row are made from sheet brass and then coated with varnish to mimic distant rusty debris. The middle row of pictures shows the "priestly robe" of a higher social class in the designed dystopian world. The fabric is made of heavy dark blue felt and a large square piece of fabric using a zero-waste method. The pictures below show items of clothing, the color and structure of which should be reminiscent of concrete and rubble. Various color spays were used for this. The accordion-form- concept from the following part of the design course can be found in all parts of the collection as a three-dimensional shape, what becomes particularly evident in the coat, which is shown in the middle row of the images.

design course V. semester - part two

bag workshop - "bagpack"

In the second part of the design course in the fifth semester, the task consisted of developing and manufacturing a sort of bag or backpack. The idea behind the resulting "bagpack" relates to the problem of usually having to choose between a small or large bag - or having to carry both with you. As a solution to this dilemma, a bag-backpack was designed that works as a small shoulder bag, which can also be extended to a larger backpack. The folding technique of an old accordion served as inspiration for the construction.

design course IV. semester

knit happens

The design course of the 4th semester was about knitting itself. It startet with learning various techniques for producing  fabrics on old industrial knitting machines. The resulting handcrafted collection shows a sweater, a dress and shorts. The yarn used is made of merino wool. Only the orange contrasting seams are made of mixed fibers with a polyester content. The top on the right side is a result of an experiment in which a complicated sequence of machine settings and the simultaneous use of different yarns led to a three-dimensional surface. The yarns consist of various mixed fibers and unlike the main collection, the individual pieces were stretched directly into shape and then processed by hand into a short tank top.

design course III. semester

free concept

The focus of the concept development in this design course was on free design. In the collection with a total of three outfits, natural materials in blue, red to white tones were selected. They reflect the color scheme of my own room this time. Different methods of fabric processing were used in order to simulate the variety of patterns in the room. Ornaments were printed on the fabrics with hand-carved stencils and fabric paints and oriental patterns were embroidered on the garments.
